Amerime

When I was reading today's Penny Arcade, I noticed the add on the side was for an anime movie that had won "Best Animated Film" from some award I'd never heard of. Seeing this got me thinking about anime, and cultural differences.

Here in the U.S., animation is not the realm of serious art. It is primarily used for entertaining children, and for adults, it is dominated by comedy. In Japan though, there are many serious stories told with animation, stories that could not be describe with the typical American "that's cute." Some of these films have made there way to across the pond, (can you say that about the Pacific?) but here, anime is the realm of little kids and nerds. The closest it came to edging its way into American pop culture was Pokemon, and we all know how big that was with people over the age of 15. All this led to one question: In Japan, does anime have a broad cultural appeal, or is it relegated to the same circles as it is here?

A small aside, and then my point: I think anime is mostly silly. Almost every anime I've seen has had at least one element to place it in this category, whether it be magical cop-outs, premises I don't care a lick about, or just being really, really weird. The only anime I've actually enjoyed watching was full of more Japanese cultural references than you can shake a stick at, and believe it or not, I couldn't really relate. Even then, I couldn't escape that God-awful flying blurry background thing that seems to be a required genre cliche. Though I find anime silly, I am not against animation as a serious medium.

Here's what I'd like to see: an American company needs to make a serious animation project, whether it be TV or a movie, in an American animation style that does not rely on big eyes and blue hair. (even though you've gotta have the blue hair) (For reference, see the super-hero cartoons of our youth, with their serious, yet not weird animation styles) It would also be preferable that it not involve samurai, ninja, giant fighting robots, talking animals, the apocalypse, or otherwise blowing up Tokyo.

I'd like to hear from the true anime fans on this one. What do you think? Also, is there anything that fits the description that you might refer me to?

First off, you must remember that the culture in Japan in entirely different. My boss (the one that came over here from Japan when she married her American husband) was recommending Miyazaki's films to us based on their plot. I would suggest Spirited Away, it is a very good film. It still has a lot of the 'magical aspect' to it, but it is more based upon the children stories told in Japan.

But anyhow, I really like the anime Lupin the III. It doesn't have any of the magic stuff in it. The American version is really tamed down though. But anyhow, so yeah, definately try watching Spirited Away.

I wouldn't go with Spirited Away for a first time anime show, its to wacked out.
I am unsure what I would go with has a first anime show, it would really depend on what you like with fiction (vampires, med evil fantasy, etc).
Japan uses anime to tell stories of there culture thats why they picked it pretty much.
There are lots of anime that have real things that actually happened just with other fiction.
I can't really think of a movie anime that would be good to start on.
What do you like...and i don't mean in anime, just in tv and movies.

Anime is like beer. 'Nuff said, I think.

I appreciate the advice, but you're all missing the point. I'm not looking for an anime recomendation. I'm wondering if there have been any serious animated productions aimed at American adults. I've gotta say though, Sean, that quote is freakin' priceless.

I was actually thinking Princess Mononoke as well I just couldn't remember the freaking name.
But there really aren't a lot of anime's aimed for us. The count that like it here is still to small.
And a lot are never even released here because they think we are to soft hearted.
Samarui (sp) X (this might be the wrong name for it)would be a really great show for you to watch considing your major.
I could be thinking of the wrong name for it though...

Thanks for the interesting comments. It seems that there's nothing out there like what I'm talking about...oh well, I'm sure some visionary director will fill the niche sometime. I think that anime show that I enjoyed was Samurai Champloo or something like that. Anyway, it had two samurai and some girl.

Yes it is Samurai Champloo Alexander and I have all the dvds that are out right now if you ever wanna try and watch them just tell us.
Now I don't know about all the shows on the dvds but I know one was actually based off facts. It was about a painting and the guy that paints with sunflowers and if i had more time i would sit here and write about it and why it was but i gotta go.
